8 Traits to Be Successful

Success is a highly subjective word, but at its core, it means to accomplish an aim or purpose. When you think of someone who is successful, there is a list of characteristics that come to mind. Here are eight common traits that you should strive to develop in order to be successful in your career.

1. Drive

One of the main traits that you see across the board is an innate desire to achieve one’s goals. Successful people tend to be enthusiastic and continually driven to improve their situation. Even if they falter, their drive enables them to get back on track and keep their eyes on the prize. On the other side, when they find success, that usually isn’t enough and they want to achieve even more.

2. Optimism

It’s rare to see someone who’s wildly successful and a pessimist. Those who succeed usually have a glass half full mentality and are able to see the good in every situation. They also don’t allow negativity from outside sources to influence them. There’s a difference between pessimism and realism. You can be optimistic but you also have to be realistic at times.

3. Desire to Learn

Most successful people acknowledge that they don’t have all of the answers. Instead, they seek to build upon their knowledge and become well-rounded. They’re also intensely curious about the world. It’s this curiosity that motivates them to keep learning throughout all stages of life.  Either in the professional life, with a hobby or just with general knowledge, the desire to learn and become more knowledgeable leads to more success because it continues the drive to improve.

4. Being Grateful

Having an attitude of gratitude is something that many successful individuals share. Rather than complaining about what isn’t going right, they’re grateful for the opportunities they have and the blessings that come their way. This trait relates to being optimistic. Focusing on the positive and being grateful for opportunities will have an effect not only on your success but on the success of others.

5. Being Responsible

Whether it’s ensuring that they always show up for work on time or complete projects by their deadlines, those who are successful take responsibility for their actions. They’re not the type of people who make excuses, they own up to their mistakes. It’s acceptable to make mistakes in any aspect of life, especially if they aren’t careless. Learning from those mistakes to avoid them in the future gains respect of your colleagues and management.

6. Team Player

These individuals realize that it takes sound teamwork to get the job done correctly. They’re always willing to lend a hand to help others and consistently contribute for the greater good of the team.  When success results from the team project, being honest about your contribution and sharing success with the team also gains the respect of your co-workers.

7. Finding Balance

Both the workplace and everyday life require a pretty delicate balancing act. Successful people recognize this and strive to keep their work life and personal life in balance at all times. They know when it’s time to be serious and get to work. But at the same time, they know when it’s time to relax and play.

8. Helping Others/Giving Back

Finally, successful individuals are able to look beyond themselves and lend a hand to help someone in need. They are able to see the big picture and are dedicated to working toward the greater good of the world. They’re always ready to offer advice when others need it and don’t mind taking time out of their day to help someone else. This trait requires wanting to help other people because they will benefit, not because you will feel needed.

Developing these eight traits is a formula for success that can help your career growth and be a better person.
