Quality vs. Quantity – What’s Better for Your Job Search?

There are two thought processes when conducting a job search. One is to only apply for the jobs you know you have a good shot at getting a callback or an interview for – quality. The other is to apply for every possible job you could work for – quantity. But which is the better option for you? Let’s find out.

Quality Tends to Be More Successful

Most job seekers find more success focusing on applying for jobs they are highly qualified for. Rather than sending out 20+ applications for jobs, sending applications for quality positions that match your skillset should lead to more success.

Why? According to an eye-tracking study from TheLadders, “Recruiters spend an average of six seconds reviewing an individual resume.” This doesn’t bode well for unqualified candidates, and you’re far better off opting for quality over quantity. This is often your ticket to getting a positive response from recruiters.

The bottom line is that you need to create a plan and stick to it. You can always make adjustments over time, but give it a shot for a few weeks and stick with targeting the jobs you’re most qualified for.  If you are finding success, that’s great! If you aren’t getting the results you want, then it’s time to make an adjustment, whether it’s in your targeting, cover letter, resume or another part of the process.

How Can You Apply for Quality Jobs?

One of the best approaches is to use a staffing agency. You can leverage their extensive network and expertise to narrow your search and pinpoint quality job opportunities. Just by spending some time discussing your background, experience, credentials, etc., can improve your chances with being matched with a relevant position. This saves time and minimizes any frustration on your end.

Another option is to use referrals. Research from Glassdoor.com found, “Interviews from employee referrals are much more likely to lead to an accepted job offer; employee referrals boost the odds of a successful job match by a statistically significant 2.6 – 6.6 percent. So be sure to talk to family, friends or former colleagues to see if they know of any available positions that would be a good fit for you.”

Finally, when searching for jobs, pick companies who you know will be a good fit. Pay attention to key factors like daily tasks, critical skills, company culture, salary, and benefits. When you find a job description, think about how you can relate to those factors and how you are a good fit. Do you have examples to talk about specific skills or how you relate to the company culture?

In most cases, your best bet is to aim for quality over quantity with your job search. Although you won’t be applying for as many job opportunities, you’ll have a better chance of getting a callback and being invited to an interview. This way you can make the most out of your time and increase the likelihood of finding a position in which you’ll thrive.
