What Helps a Quiet Personality Find Job Search Success?

The job search process can be demanding regardless of your personality type. But if you have a quiet or introverted personality, it can seem even more difficult. Often people with this type of personality are overlooked in favor of individuals with more extroverted, boisterous personalities. Although you can’t control your innate disposition, there are multiple other factors you can control that will help your job search.

Good Body Language – Be Confident!

Projecting confidence and aptitude begins with developing good body language. If you can get this right, it’s going to increase your chances of making a great first impression and establishing rapport with your interviewer. Here are some specific body language habits you should strive to develop:

 

  • Maintain eye contact throughout the interview (but don’t stare)
  • Sit still in your chair (try to avoid being fidgety because this is a sign of nervousness)
  • Sit in an “open position” and avoid crossing your arms
  • Maintain a tall posture
  • Nod your head periodically to let your interviewer know that you’re listening

Also, ask a friend or loved one for feedback on your body language to identify areas where you could use some improvement.

Adequate Preparation

There’s an old saying that goes as follows. “Proper preparation prevents poor performance.” This will increase your confidence, and you’ll be ready for pretty much anything the interviewer throws at you.

Here are some ways you can prepare:

  • Research the company you’re applying with – learn about their history, culture, and the job description
  • Rehearse answers to common interview questions
  • Determine how your existing skills and qualifications tie into the job
  • Decide what to bring with you (e.g. multiple copies of your resume, your portfolio, etc.)

Recognize Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Maybe you’re not a natural extrovert, but you probably have some other amazing gifts that will wow the interviewer. Take the time to recognize both your strengths and weaknesses beforehand so you have an objective understanding of what you bring to the table.

For instance, you may want to write down the top five attributes that make you qualified for the job as well as some areas that could use improvement. Then use your known weaknesses as fuel for getting better.

Don’t let a quiet personality or being an introvert be a hindrance. Embrace it. By working on your body language, properly preparing and being honest with yourself, you’ll be in the best possible position to make a splash and place yourself as a frontrunner for the job.
