4 Tips to Make Onboarding Enjoyable for Everyone

Developing a smooth, efficient onboarding system should be your top priority. After all, “69 percent of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experienced great onboarding.” Besides increasing retention, effective onboarding can be the catalyst for improved performance and productivity. Here are four practical tips to make onboarding more enjoyable and equip new hires for success.

1. Plan Ahead

The last thing you want is to find yourself scrambling on your employees’ first day. Be organized well beforehand to move new hires through the process seamlessly. This typically starts with assembling packets of important information, including company policies, job description, educational material, contacts and more.

You also want to have a rough outline of the topics you’ll cover and in what order. There are free onboarding checklists and templates available online.

 2. Initiate Introductions

Onboarding can be stressful for new hires. They absorb a lot of information, understand their role within your organization and get to know their new colleagues. Formally introduce new employees to your existing team and other departments. This should expedite the chemistry-building process and make it easier for your more introverted employees to form connections.

 3. Look for Areas of Improvement

A big part of providing the best possible onboarding experience is to address areas where the process can be improved.  One of the easiest ways to do this is to ask your recent hires for their input on what could use improvement. For instance, certain company policies could be unclear or someone may suggest creating an email where you include links to helpful resources. Sometimes even minor tweaks can make a world of difference.

4. Don’t Throw Too Much at New Hires

Immersing oneself in a new environment and acclimating to the culture can be incredibly overwhelming. You can only expect a person to digest so much information within a short period of time. Be conscious of how much you’re throwing at new hires. Don’t give them more than they can handle, and if necessary, break things down over the course of a few days.

Effective onboarding lays the foundation for a new employee’s success, and in the long run, contributes to your company’s success. Therefore, it’s something to take seriously. Following these four tips should iron out any kinks and make it a better experience for everyone involved.
