Is Your Next Job Out There on Social Media?

Social media has revolutionized the way that humans interact and connect with one another in several different ways. Besides simply being a glorified outlet for water cooler discussions, it can be a valuable tool for job seekers when you know how to utilize it correctly. Here’s what you need to know about finding a job through social media.

The Majority of Recruiters are Active on Social Media

Here are a few statistics to give you a better idea of the potential of this outlet as a job search tool:

  • 73 percent of 18-34-year-olds found their last job through a social network
  • 94 percent of recruiters are active on LinkedIn
  • 65 percent of recruiters are active on Facebook

This is tangible proof that social media can serve as a powerful way to find and connect with potential employers. That’s why it’s so important that you’re also active on these networks and portray yourself in a positive light.

What Recruiters are Looking For

Although Axiom does not use social networks to research job candidates, CareerBuilder conducted a survey that asked employers why they use social networks to research job candidates. According to the survey,

  • 65 percent said they do it to see if the job seeker presents themselves professionally;
  • 51 percent want to know if the candidate is a good fit for the company culture; and
  • 45 percent want to learn more about their qualifications

What does this mean from a candidate’s point of view? It means that it’s imperative that you convey a sense of professionalism on your profiles and demonstrate why you’re qualified for a certain position. This means that you want to put plenty of thought into the type of content you post, the images you share, what you say publicly, etc.

Which Networks Should You Use?

Most experts would agree that LinkedIn is pound-for-pound the best social media site for job searchers, because it’s specifically designed for business networking. Not only does it provide the perfect way to demonstrate your skills, you can also post your job history, qualifications and even apply for positions directly through the site.

Facebook is usually regarded as the second-best network because of the more than one billion people who actively use it. There are countless community pages for conducting job searches – and you can always connect directly with recruiters. Also, networks like Twitter, Instagram and even Google+ can be used for finding jobs.

If you’re not using social media, you’re definitely missing out on opportunities to further your career. By building your profiles and establishing a presence, you’ll be in a position to connect with numerous recruiters and can increase your odds of landing a job significantly.
