What Do You Wear to a Manufacturing Interview?

The clothing you wear to an interview will play a big role in the impression you make, and will be a significant factor in whether or not you land a job. It’s obviously important to look your best for a manufacturing interview. But at the same time, you don’t necessarily want to be overdressed. Here’s some advice for choosing the proper attire and impressing your recruiter.

Should You Wear a Suit?

While formal attire such as a suit is standard in many industries, it’s often considered to be overkill for a manufacturing interview. When you think about it, interview attire typically reflects the type of wardrobe that employees will wear during day-to-day operations. In an office-based setting, a suit would be the norm.

But in an industrial-based setting, it’s usually more about practicality. On an average day, most workers will wear company uniforms or fairly relaxed attire because a suit would simply be impractical.

What’s Best for a Manufacturing Interview?

Generally speaking, you won’t be required or even expected to wear a suit. However, you’ll definitely want to dress nicely and be presentable. Some examples are:

  • Dress slacks and a nice button up-shirt
  • Sweater or blouse with slacks or a skirt
  • dress shoes or loafers
  • pumps or subtle heels

If you want to stay conservative with your clothing selection, stick with more neutral tones – black, white, gray and beige. However, if you have an outgoing personality and want to reflect that in your clothing, don’t be hesitant to wear bright colors.

Additional Tips

Any clothing that’s worn should be freshly washed, free of wrinkles and stains. Hair should be nicely combed, and those with longer hair may want to put it into a ponytail. Facial hair should be clean-shaven or neatly groomed.

Jewelry should be kept to a bare minimum. If you have any facial piercings other than earrings, it’s best to remove them before the interview.

Dressing for a manufacturing interview is fairly straightforward. By choosing the appropriate attire and following a few tips, you can portray yourself in a favorable light and set a positive tone for the interview.
