Stressed at Work? These Tips Will Help

Stress is an issue that’s plaguing the modern workplace. Research from Office Vibe found that “77 percent of employees regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress, and 73 percent regularly experience psychological symptoms.” Fortunately, there are several different ways to manage your workplace stress.

Listen to Calming Music

Calming music such as quiet classical can be tremendously helpful for diminishing stress. According to Psych Central, “This type of music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.”

Spending a few minutes listening to calming music on your break should help you unwind and recharge your batteries. It can also help take your mind off of things so you can return to your job more refreshed.

Take a Walk

Multiple studies have been conducted on the impact of walking and its correlation with stress reduction. What researchers found was there’s a direct link with taking a walk (especially in nature) and lower levels of stress. That’s because walking puts you in a meditative state where stress is reduced and “feel-good” endorphins are released. An added plus is walking can actually improve your memory and attention span.

Use a Stress Ball

You’ve probably seen classic stress balls before. They’re those little foam or rubber balls you squeeze to relieve stress and calm your mind. But do they actually work

According to research from different studies, “fidget widgets” such as these serve as distractions that give your mind a break, thereby reducing stress. Besides this, they can be helpful for improving your overall productivity as well. Stress balls have even been found to relieve patients’ anxiety during surgery. So it’s fair to say that stress balls can be advantageous for keeping you calmer at work.

Organize Your Workspace

Is your workspace cluttered? If so, this can also be a contributor to your stress. In fact, “Researchers at UCLA found that just looking at clutter can spur the body’s production of stress hormones, so working in a messy office or cubicle can make you stressed even if the work itself isn’t high stress.”

Keep your workspace clean and organized, no matter the setting. Doing so can reduce your stress considerably.

Workplace stress is no joke and can take a serious toll on both your physical and mental health. Implementing these tactics should help keep your stress under control and make you more effective at your job.
