4 Tips to Staying Healthy at Work

Health and wellness in the workplace is a major concern for both employers and employees. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) cites that some of today’s top health-related challenges are diabetes, obesity, heart disease and stroke. But there are four specific ways you can stay healthy at work and feel better overall.

1. Quit Smoking

The CDC also reports “Smoking and other forms of tobacco use are the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, accounting for one in every five deaths each year.” If you smoke cigarettes, you should make every attempt to improve your health and eliminate it from your lifestyle.

Some ways to do so include:

  • Getting rid of any smoking paraphernalia such as ash trays and lighters
  • Beginning a new hobby to occupy your mind
  • Avoiding alcohol because it could trigger you to smoke again
  • Drinking plenty of water because it hastens the nicotine detox process F

2. Eat Healthy

A well-balanced diet is essential to staying healthy at work. Unfortunately, many Americans aren’t getting the proper nutrition they need. More specifically, “Typical American diets exceed” the recommended intake levels or limits in four categories: Calories from solid fats and added sugars, refined grains, sodium, and saturated fat.

Here are some tips for eating healthier:

  • Eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables
  • Manage your portions, especially when eating high-calorie foods
  • Limit your sugar and sodium intake
  • Stay away from trans fats like commercial baked goods

3. Drink Healthy

In addition to managing your diet, it’s important to keep an eye on what you drink. For instance, beverages like soda and alcohol can have a negative impact on your health, especially when consumed in excess. Instead, make it a point to drink the following types of beverages

  • Water
  • Reduced-fat milk
  • Green tea
  • Orange juice
  • Low-sodium tomato juice

4. Stay active

A sedentary lifestyle and general lack of activity can be contributors to obesity, cardiovascular issues, depression and even cancer. In other words, it’s toxic to your body. But you can stay healthy at work by routinely stretching to keep your body loose, walking during your breaks and alternating between sitting and standing positions.

Taking measures to stay healthy at work can have a positive impact on you both physically and mentally. You’re far less likely to develop health complications and can be a more productive employee in general.
