3 Tips to Add a Healthy Habit to Your Routine

Setting goals is a critical aspect of personal growth and a key contributor to long-term success. Following the correct process can be difficult and challenging. In turn, you may become frustrated or experience burnout if you set your goals too high. Here are three tips to proper goal setting that will increase your chances of success.

1. Understand What You Have to Change

It all starts with making an honest assessment of yourself. Determine what mental or physical barrier is holding you back and getting in your way. Although this isn’t always comfortable, it’s completely necessary for improvement. In the long run, you’ll be glad that you were honest with yourself.

2. Have an Achievable Goal

“Achievable” is the key word here. If your goal is unrealistic or unattainable, the odds are good that you’ll get frustrated and stop. This isn’t to say that you should sell yourself short and set your sights low, but it’s important to set goals that are legitimately achievable.

For example, aiming to be the CEO of a billion dollar company by the end of the month probably isn’t realistic. However, setting a goal of getting a promotion by the end of the year is more attainable.

It’s also ideal for your goal to be measurable. If you can measure the results, you’ll know exactly how much progress you’ve made and if any areas demand your attention. Set a date you want to achieve your goal by.

3. Break Down That Goal into Mini Goals

There’s an old quote that says, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” This encompasses the mindset that it usually takes time to make your goal a reality. It’s impossible to find success if you try to do it overnight. But if you break things into mini goals, your odds increase exponentially. This also reduces your stress and that feeling of being overwhelmed.

If it takes a month for you to actualize your goal, break it down into individual weeks and then day-by-day. This way you’ll know exactly what you need to accomplish on a daily basis to keep things on track and ultimately get across the finish line.

Also, don’t forget to celebrate the smaller victories along the way. This will give you a nice confidence boost and should provide you with the encouragement needed to stay the course.

There’s no denying that goal setting is a healthy habit. But it’s important to go about it the right way. Following these three tips should help you approach your goals more effectively and minimize any friction along the way.
