REPORT: Recruiters Focus on Three Areas to Land the Best Candidates

Recruiting can be a difficult and challenge for many companies. A lack of qualified candidates, growing competition and increasing salary expectations are some issues modern recruiters face. But you can streamline the recruiting process and find great candidates by focusing on three key areas.

1. Industry Knowledge

“Previous job experience is the number one most important hiring factor for 92 percent of recruiters,” according to Jobvite’s 2017 Recruiter Nation Report. You can do yourself a big favor by strictly searching for candidates with industry knowledge and who have a proven track record of success. This greatly increases your chances of finding a person who is the right fit and will require only minimal on-the-job training.

Fortunately, there are two easy ways to filter through candidates: 1) specifically state industry knowledge is required in your job description; and 2) use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to search resumes for relevant skills.

2. Conversation Skills

Jobvite also reports, “Conversation skills impact 69 percent of recruiters’ decision to hire a candidate.” The logic here is being able to effectively communicate and interact smoothly with co-workers and customers is critical for being a good “cultural fit.”

While important in all positions, this is especially critical for employees who will be working within teams or consistently interacting with customers. Pay close attention to an individual’s conversation skills, how fluid they are with their speech and how well they’re able to articulate their thoughts.

3. Enthusiasm

Finally, Jobvite points out, “62 percent of recruiters decide to hire a candidate based on their enthusiasm.” Also factoring into a cultural fit, a candidate with genuine enthusiasm is more likely to put their best foot forward and be productive than someone who is disinterested or apathetic about their job. You’ll also find they tend to be easier to work with and are likely to contribute to overall team chemistry, which is extremely important in a collaborative workplace.

You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration by knowing which areas to focus on when selecting job candidates. The three listed here are your best bet for ultimately finding an employee with the right skill set and who fits in well with your company culture.
