Your job search is obviously serious and a way to show your professional experience and skills. That being said, it’s also important to showcase your personality to hiring managers. Here are three simple ways to do so.

1. Be Original in Your Cover Letter

The way you write your cover letter and the specific information you include gives recruiters an instant feel for what you’re like as an employee as well as a person. So the last thing you want to do is create a boring, generic cover letter that’s devoid of personality. This gives you an opportunity to be unique and differentiate yourself from other applicants.

How do you ensure you’re original? Start by avoiding the conventional “I am applying for [X position]” in the first line. Instead, begin with an interesting hook that will grab a hiring manager’s attention. For example, if you were applying for a position as a machine operator, you might say something like “I’ve been fascinated by how machines work since I was a child.” Then tie that into the position.

Some other techniques include:

  • Avoiding clichéd openings like “Dear sir or madam” (try to find the recruiter’s first name and use that instead)
  • Incorporate specific keywords from the job description
  • Comment on the company culture

2. Include Fun Facts in Your Resume

Besides highlighting your experience, education and qualifications, your resume also gives you a chance to explain what makes you interesting. Including some fun facts allows you to create a more personal connection and can increase your chances of ultimately landing an interview.

An easy way to do this is to create a “fun fact” section and add a few bullet points that highlight those fun facts. Some examples could be you hiked the Appalachian Trail, you’re a skilled guitar player or you’re an amazing salsa dancer.

3. Share Your Passions, Strengths and Weaknesses During Your Interview

At this point, a recruiter should have a pretty good idea of what your personality is like. But you can highlight it by touching on your passions, strengths and weaknesses during your interview. This should really give them a feel for what it would be like to work with you.

Of course, when it comes to weaknesses, you don’t want to portray yourself in a negative light, so you’ll want to also explain what you’ve done to overcome them. Maybe your communication skills were lackluster, but working in a team setting at your previous job really helped you improve in this area.

Showcasing your personality is a big part of standing out from the competition and can greatly aid your job search. Using these three techniques should help you do this effectively and make you a more interesting candidate.
