It’s hard to stress enough the importance of finding top candidates for a job. The strength of your recruiting efforts heavily impacts the success of your company and your overall bottom line.  Sometimes great recruiting isn’t finding the candidates who are actively seeking a job. It’s finding the ones who aren’t looking but are willing to accept the right offer that comes along.

These are known as passive candidates, and 73 percent of job seekers fall into this category. Here are five tips to recruiting passive candidates to improve your workforce.

1. Look at Previous Applicants

Often, quality candidates are right under your nose, and you don’t even know it. If you’ve ever posted a prior job, there are likely dozens or even hundreds of candidates who reached out to you but weren’t hired. They may be sitting in an applicant tracking system (ATS) database or your email. Going back through these former applicants and filtering by qualifications can help you amass a sizable list of passive candidates — some of which could be excellent employees.

2. Establish a Strong Social Presence

Being active on social media has numerous benefits like increased brand awareness, improved trust and lead generation. But it’s also a great way to reach out to passive candidates. For instance, you may notice that one of your LinkedIn connections has the exact qualifications you’re looking for in a worker.

3. Get Your Employees in on the Action

Referral recruitment is one of the most straightforward ways to find top candidates. And studies have found there’s less turnover with referred candidates. In fact, 46 percent stay with a company for at least three years. So it’s smart to have your employees be on the lookout for anyone who would be a good fit for a vacant position.

4. Weave Recruiting Into General Communications

As a business owner or manager, you’re likely in constant contact with customers, suppliers, vendors and more. Another way to recruit passive candidates is to weave recruiting into general communications. For example, you might include a link to a job ad in your email signature to alert people that a position is available.

5. Leverage Content Creation

Content marketing can have a tremendous impact on business progress. In fact, 72 percent of marketers say it has increased their number of leads. It can also be a fantastic medium for recruiting passive candidates. For instance, you may write a blog post or record a video answering job search questions passive candidates may have and encourage qualified individuals to reach out to you.

Sometimes the best candidates aren’t the ones actively looking for a job. It’s those who aren’t looking and are still interested in entertaining offers. Following these five tips should help you create a framework to find talented individuals in your industry.
