5 Reasons Working the Night Shift Actually Benefits You

Working long nights might not sound appealing, but we have a few points that could change your mind. Here are six benefits of working the night shift.

1. Easier Commute

“The average travel time to work in the United States is 25.4 minutes,” according to WNYC. Double that when coming home, and you’re looking at nearly an hour of commuting every day. One advantage of working night shift is you can avoid a lot of the traffic that plagues employees who work standard hours. For example, you’ll likely have very little traffic if your shift begins at 11 pm.

2. Better Work-Life Balance

Working a traditional 9 to 5 schedule makes it difficult to tend to personal matters like running errands, paying bills and going to the gym, where you’re usually doing these things on the weekend. Working night shift, however, gives you a huge chunk of time during the day where you can take care of these matters to create a better work-life balance.

3. Less Competition

Odds are you’ll have fewer co-workers when working night shift. This too can be beneficial because it’s easier to showcase your skill set and stand out. In turn, you have a better chance of climbing the company ladder and receiving a promotion.

4. Greater Sense of Autonomy

With fewer co-workers and managers during the night shift, you have more control to exercise your decision-making and leadership skills. If you crave independence and want to prove your talent, this is a great shift to work.

5. Higher Pay

Finally, there’s better compensation. “The third shift consistently is paid at a slightly higher rate than second shift,” explains the Society for Human Resource Management. So, you may earn more working nights than you would working regular business hours.

While working the night shift may not be everyone’s first choice, there are several advantages it offers. So you should definitely take these into account and at least consider working this shift if an employer offers it.
