Are You Being Ghosted by Candidates? Let’s Avoid This.

There’s nothing more frustrating than a no-show for an interview. Ghosting is a recent trend we’ve seen in the staffing and recruiting industry, and experts say it’s increased by 10 to 20 percent over the past year. Here’s how to handle it.

Keep Candidates in the Loop

When performing a job search, most candidates will apply to multiple companies. So it’s unlikely that you’re the only employer they’re interested in. If they don’t hear from you after several days or a week, they may simply look elsewhere and take the first offer that comes their way. And once candidates have secured another position, many will simply “go ghost”, and you’ll never hear from them again.

You can greatly reduce the odds of this happening by respecting each candidate’s time and keeping them in the loop as to where you are in the hiring process. Rather than leaving them hanging, sending an email after a few days saying they’ve been shortlisted should keep candidates engaged. It’s all about being transparent and letting them know where they stand. When you value their time, they’re more likely to value yours.

Create a Clear Employee Value Proposition

An employee value proposition (EVP) is “the balance of rewards and benefits that are received by employees in return for their performance at the workplace,” explains recruiting platform TalentLyft. When candidates have a clear understanding of what your EVP is, it should make your company more desirable and the position more attractive.

So you’ll want to include key elements of your EVP in the job description, on your website, social media accounts, and so on. Some examples include:

  • Competitive pay
  • Great benefits
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Career development opportunities

Showcase Your Company Culture

Having a positive company culture is also critical for winning over candidates and ensuring they show up for their interview. So it’s important to project the right image throughout the hiring process. Perhaps the best way to accomplish this is to create a robust website that gives prospects a feel for what your company is like and what your values and philosophy are.

It’s also smart to create an employment video that walks them through a day in the life of one of your employees. This should make the position more appealing and reduce the chances of no-shows for interviews.

Ghosting by job candidates has become an issue for many employers. But following these tips should help you correct problems that lead to this behavior.
