Is the Key to a Better Work-Life Balance, A New Job?

There are many factors that contribute to a healthy work-life balance: hours, your boss, your commute, etc. But are these aspects you can change in your current role, or could a new job be the solution? Here are some critical factors to take into consideration.

Commute Time

“The national average commute time in the U.S. is 26.6 minutes, according to the Census Bureau. “That means as a whole, the daily average American commute time is just under an hour, 53.2 minutes, assuming one round trip.” If you work five days a week, that means you’ll spend nearly five hours driving to and from work. If you can find a new job with a significantly shorter commute time than your current one, this is a huge asset from a work-life balance standpoint.

Vacation Days

More than half (52 percent) of employees reported having unused vacation days in 2018. The main reason was that they were afraid tasks would pile up and they would be backlogged once they returned. But this is problematic because it means you’re not getting a much-needed break, which can disrupt your work-life balance and take a toll on your health. If it’s clear that a new position will allow you to take vacation days comfortably, it’s likely the better option.

Flexibility

A growing number of employers are now offering telecommuting, flexible scheduling, or alternative hours — something that’s very appealing to many workers. Having the ability to fine-tune your schedule in a way that’s comfortable for you can also improve your work-life balance.

Overlap Between Work and Your Personal Life

Finally, you’ll want to look at how much of an overlap there is between your job and personal life. For example, your workday may not truly end at your current position if you’re required to respond to emails around the clock, which can lead to stress and burnout. However, a new job may have little to no overlap. When you clock out, you’re done, which would probably make it the better choice.

Achieving a healthy work-life balance is a major goal for most employees, and for a good reason. If you’re not satisfied with your work-life balance at your current job, you’ll want to consider a different position with an employer you’re better suited for.
