Why Now Might Be a Good Time for a Career Change

2020 has definitely been one for the books. It’s unlikely you’ll ever encounter another year with as many professional twists and turns as you may have experienced so far. Whether you’re laid off, working from home, or still doing what you were pre-pandemic, the fact remains: Odd as it may seem, right now might be a great time for a career change. Here’s why:

There’s no use playing it safe.

The world is changing rapidly, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only sped up that process. Change with it. There’s no use playing it safe — where has that ever gotten you? Staying on the same path works for a time, but not forever. If you’ve been considering making a change, such a volatile time might seem risky. But the truth is that it actually makes a lot of sense. Everything else is changing and adjusting, so it makes sense that you would, too.

Change can be good.

Far too often, we think of change as a scary thing. And it can be. But oftentimes, change is a good thing. How long have you been considering a career change? How often have you wished you had more opportunities to learn and grow? Making a change can achieve those goals, and there’s no time like the present. While so many other things are changing, you may as well do the same.

Laid off? You’ve got time.

If you’re one of the many, many individuals who have been furloughed or laid off entirely during this troubling time, you’re in a unique position. Difficult as this time may be, there’s at least one silver lining: you have time to consider a career change and work toward making it happen. Previously, it was probably difficult to find the time to advance your education in another area or look for jobs in another field… now, you have time to do those things. By the time things are returning to normal, you can be armed with the tools you need to make the change you want.

You don’t have to worry about resume gaps.

Gaps of unemployment on your resume used to be a hard thing to explain to employers. But now that millions of people will have those gaps thanks to the pandemic, employers won’t hold them against you. That’s another silver lining of this situation! And it makes it even easier to consider a career change — you don’t have to concern yourself with finding new employment right away, if you’re in a position to do so. It’s the perfect time to think about another path.
