Do I Need a Resume to Get a Job?

Do you need a resume to get a job? The answer isn’t quite as cut-and-dry as a “yes” or “no.” There are certainly instances in which you could secure a job without a resume, yes, but it’s not exactly common or likely. And it depends on a lot of factors, like the industry you’re in, connections you may have, your particular qualifications or skills, and more.

All things considered, though, it never hurts to have a resume — in fact, it’s highly recommended. Here’s why.

Your resume sells you.

Think of your resume as a way of selling your skills to an employer.  Your resume is a document that summarizes your experience, qualifications, and achievements. Still, it’s also a document that should demonstrate your value as an employee and your potential value to the particular employer in question. If you don’t have a resume, it’s purely up to you to do that selling — you have nothing backing you up.

Your resume gets you interviews.

Don’t think of your resume as the thing that will get you the job. Think of it as the thing that will get you the interview. Then, once that happens, it’s your job to shine during your conversation with the hiring manager or supervisor. Resumes are there to help you secure an interview. Many companies won’t grant an interview without a resume, so it’s in your best interest to have these documents ready.

Your resume helps you stay organized.

Resumes also offer a benefit to you, the employee. By writing down your skills, achievements, and qualifications, it helps you get a better grasp of your career path up to this point and what you’re truly good at. That helps you focus on what kind of jobs to apply for, not to mention what kind of job you really want. Using your resume to assess and quantify your skillset and career goals is never a bad thing!

Your resume offers security.

You just never know when a job opportunity might come up that you want to pursue. And you just can’t know when you might need to look for a new position out of necessity. In these instances, having an updated resume on-hand is a huge benefit.
