What Shift Would Work Best for My Lifestyle?

Do you work in an industry that gives you a choice over what shift you’d like to work? Typically, there is day shift (9:00 to 5:00 or some variation thereof), second shift (usually 3:00 p.m. to midnight or so), and overnight. A normal 9 to 5 and shift work both have their pros and cons for different people — let’s take a closer look so you can decide what’s best for your lifestyle.

9-to-5: Pros

Because working during the daytime hours aligns more with the body’s natural circadian rhythm, working a 9-to-5 schedule is generally healthier for you versus, say, staying up all night. You’ll be able to maintain your normal sleep schedule and generally keep the routine you’re probably used to. People who work 9-to-5 also generally enjoy good job security and more social interaction with coworkers. It’s also usually easier to coordinate events outside of work with friends and family.

9-to-5: Cons

The main con of 9-to-5 schedules is that it doesn’t offer as much flexibility as other shifts do. You won’t be able to attend appointments or other obligations during the daytime hours. And depending on your company and circumstances, 9-to-5 workers tend to have a higher workload and often have to work under tighter deadlines. Supervisors, HR employees, and others also tend to work during the day, so there are typically more people around during these shifts.

Shift Work: Pros

One big benefit of shift work is that it can often command a higher salary or wage than 9-to-5 counterparts, thanks to evening or night differential. You’ll also have a more flexible schedule; you can use your free daylight hours however you please. It’s often much easier to get to appointments, take care of children, and run errands if you work in shifts.

Shift Work: Cons

One drawback of shift work is that you’ll need to adjust your schedule, including your sleep schedule if you work overnight. This can cause some negative health effects over time if you don’t take care of yourself, and it can decrease the time for socialization with friends and family since you’ll probably be working when others are spending time together.

Ultimately, deciding whether a daytime schedule or shift work is better for you is your decision. And whatever kind of work you’re looking for, Axiom Staffing group can help in your journey. Take a look at our current job openings and contact us to get started.
