Mental Health Reminders to Use Your Paid Time Off

How often do you let your paid time off hours go to waste? If you do, you’re not alone. Millions of American workers fail to use their vacation days every year. But neglecting to use your PTO can have consequences.

Here are just three of the most important reasons to use your paid time off this year:

It’s good for you physically.

Did you know that taking time off is good for your physical health? Overworking and not giving yourself enough downtime can affect your body. CNBC reports that overwork puts people at increased risk of ailments like cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, depression and anxiety, among others. When you take breaks like you need to, however, these risks go way down. So, if for no other reason, take care of your own body — use those vacation days and give yourself a break. They are there for a reason!

It’s good for you mentally.

Americans who use most or all of their vacation days report higher levels of happiness than those who don’t. To put it simply, you need a healthy work-life balance. When work takes over your life and it’s all you think about, your mental health starts to decline. And if that progresses for a period of time, it can lead to burnout. Then, you’ll feel unmotivated, overwhelmed, and disengaged, which isn’t good for your mental health or your career. It’s essential that you give your mind a break, just like your body — using your PTO is designed for that.

It’s good for your family.

When you look back at your life in 10, 20, or 40 years from now, what will you remember? The hours spent at your desk, working on that project to get it in before the deadline? Or will you remember the vacations you took with your family, the good times spent at home with those you love? Making your family a priority is important. Humans need those relationships to live happy, healthy lives — you won’t be able to do that if you spend all your time at work. There are more important things than your career, after all.
