Is It Bad if I Apply to Multiple Jobs at the Same Company?

It’s a scenario that many job candidates have come across at some point or another: they find an open position with a company that they’d like to apply for. Soon enough, they realize that multiple positions fit the bill. And applying to multiple positions at the same company only increases the chances of securing a job, right?

This is a tricky situation to navigate for a job candidate. Read on to find out whether or not it’s acceptable and what to do when you qualify for multiple positions at the same company.

Is it okay to apply to multiple jobs at the same company?

There’s no rule against applying to multiple jobs at the same company. However, it’s hard to predict how any given company might respond. Some might see it as a way of trying to cheat the system and pass you up for all of the opportunities. Others might see it as you expressing serious interest. So, it is acceptable to apply for multiple jobs with the same company, but it’s important that you do so tastefully.

Generally, try not to apply for more than two jobs at the same company at the same time. This is a good rule of thumb to follow to make sure you don’t come across as obnoxious or overzealous, while still giving you a chance at securing an interview for one job or the other.

How do I narrow down the choices?

Make a list of your qualifications and experience. Compare this list to the multiple job postings that you’re considering applying for. Now, apply the 80% rule: which job postings do you meet 80% of the qualifications for? If there are postings listed that you don’t have 80% or more of the qualifications for, skip them. This should help narrow down your choices to one or two postings that really fit you best. If you still have more than two, use your best judgment and narrow down the list as best as you can.

What can I do to better my chances?

When you do apply for multiple positions at the same company, there are a few things you could try to better your chances of securing one job or the other. First, tailor your resume and cover letter to each specific position that you’re applying for. You might even consider addressing the fact that you’re applying to multiple positions directly in the cover letter in order to be as transparent as possible. You can also contact the recruiter or hiring manager of the company to let them know you feel qualified for multiple positions and have applied as such.
