10 Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Job
Accepting a new job is a big decision, and you should feel good about it before day one. That’s why we encourage every candidate to ask questions. The more you know up front, the better the fit.
Here are the questions we think are worth asking before you accept an assignment with Axiom. We’re always happy to answer them.
1. What’s the pay rate, exactly?
Not a range. Not “competitive.” The number.
If you hear a range, ask what it takes to reach the top of it and what you’d start at. It’s also worth asking when raises happen.
2. What shift is it, and how long is it?
First, second or third. Start and end time. Eight hours or twelve. Four days or five.
Second and third shift often pay a premium. In manufacturing, second shift premiums commonly run around $1 to $3 an hour, with third shift often higher (Nightowling). If you’re working nights, ask whether there’s a shift differential.
3. Is overtime expected or optional?
It makes a big difference. Mandatory overtime during a seasonal ramp-up changes your week, so it helps to know before you plan childcare or other commitments around a 40-hour schedule.
4. Where is it, and what’s parking like?
Ask for the actual address, not just the city. A job “in Atlanta” could be a 15-minute drive or 50, and the difference in gas over a few months adds up.
Also ask about parking, gate entry and whether there’s a bus route nearby. These details make your day-to-day much easier.
5. Is this temporary, temp-to-hire, or direct hire?
These are different, and it’s worth being clear on which one you’re accepting.
Temporary has a defined end. It’s useful for filling a gap or covering a season.
Temp-to-hire means you start as a temporary employee, and the company can bring you on permanently. A good follow-up: what does it take to convert, and how long does it usually take?
Direct hire means you’re the company’s employee from day one.
None is better than the others. It depends on what you need. Axiom offers all three (learn more about how that works).
6. How often do I get paid, and how?
Weekly or every two weeks. Direct deposit or pay card. When’s the first check?
That last one matters. If you’re between jobs, knowing when your first deposit arrives helps you plan.
7. Does this cost me anything?
No. At Axiom, our services are always free to job seekers. We’re paid by the employers we work with, so you never pay a fee to be placed, whether for an application, a background check, placement or training.
8. What does the job physically involve?
Ask directly: How much lifting, and how heavy? Standing the whole shift? Climbing, bending, cold storage, heat?
There’s no wrong question here. It’s better to know a job involves repeated 50-pound lifts before day one than to find out once you are working.
9. What safety training do I get, and when?
You should receive an orientation that covers the specific site: exits, eyewash stations, pinch points and lockout procedures, not just a handbook to sign.
Ask who to go to if something seems unsafe, and whether it’s okay to stop and ask. Your safety always comes first.
10. Who do I call if there’s a problem?
You should leave with a name and a phone number. Someone who can help if your hours change, your check is wrong, or something happens on site.
On assignments where we place a larger group, we often have a coordinator working right there in the building, so the person who can help is on site, not on a voicemail.
What good answers sound like
Good answers are clear and specific, and they include the details that help you decide, like “it’s a cold environment” or “overtime is mandatory through December.” That’s the kind of conversation we want to have with every candidate, so you can accept a job with confidence.
Why we’d rather you ask
Because the right fit matters to everyone. When you know what to expect, you’re more likely to enjoy the job, and the employer gets someone who’s ready for the role.
Most surprises in the first few weeks come down to something that wasn’t discussed up front: the shift, the drive, the physical demands. All of that can be covered in a five-minute conversation before day one.
So ask. All ten, if you want. We’ve been connecting people with great jobs since 1999, and we’re always glad to have the conversation.
