How to Make a Great Impression at a Staffing Agency Interview
A staffing agency interview isn’t like a typical job interview. You’re not trying to convince one company to hire you. You’re helping a recruiter understand you well enough to match you with the right job, maybe several.
That means the more open and prepared you are, the better your chances. Here’s how to make it count.
Know what a recruiter is looking for
Recruiters want to know three things:
-
Can you do the work?
-
Will you show up?
-
What kind of job will make you want to stay?
Everything you share helps them answer those questions.
What to bring
-
A valid photo ID
-
Documents that show you’re eligible to work in the U.S.
-
Your work history, with company names, dates and what you did (a resume is great, but a written list works too)
-
Any certifications, like forklift training
-
A list of references, if you have them
Questions you’ll probably be asked
What kind of work are you looking for? Be specific. Warehouse, production, office, customer service? Day shift or night shift?
When are you available? Know which days and shifts you can work and when you can start.
How far can you travel? Many positions are located near the branch office, so think about your commute and transportation.
What have you done before? Talk about tasks, not just job titles. “I packed and labeled 300 orders a shift” says more than “warehouse worker.”
Are you open to temporary or temp-to-hire work? Being flexible can open up more options.
Be honest
If you can’t lift heavy boxes all day, say so. If you need to be home by 4 p.m. for your kids, say so. If you had a gap in work, explain it simply.
Honesty helps your recruiter avoid placing you somewhere that won’t work. That’s good for you and for the employer.
Dress neat and comfortable
You don’t need a suit. Clean, neat clothes are perfect. If you’re interviewing for warehouse or production work, closed-toe shoes are a smart choice in case you’re asked to visit a site.
Ask your own questions
A good interview goes both ways. You might ask:
-
What jobs do you have open right now?
-
What’s the pay and schedule?
-
Is there a chance this job turns permanent?
-
How and when do I get paid?
At Axiom, for example, paychecks go out weekly every Thursday, and benefits options include MEC medical, hospital indemnity, dental, vision and voluntary life insurance.
After the interview
Keep your phone on and check your voicemail. Recruiters often call when a job opens up, and the first person who answers often gets it.
It also helps to check in every few days if you haven’t heard anything. A quick call or text shows you’re serious.
Walk-ins welcome
Axiom offices are open Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 5:00. Walk-ins are welcome, though appointments are recommended. You can also start by applying online or through the Axiom Staffing Group app. Find your nearest branch.
