Are You Ready for a Phone Interview?

A phone interview should be taken just as seriously as an actual face-to-face interview. The key to success for a phone interview (or any interview) is adequate preparation. Here are some essential steps to follow to ensure that you’re ready once an interviewer calls.

Find a Quiet Location

You definitely need to be selective about the location in which you have your interview. It should be free of any disruptive noise, which can be distracting. Typically, the best place to be is at home because you’ll be in a controlled environment and won’t have to deal with extraneous noise. If you have pets, put them in a place that’s out of immediate earshot.

Have a Solid Phone Connection

The last thing you want to do is to have your phone call drop because of a poor connection. If you’re on a cell phone, stay in an area with great reception to minimize any chance of a dropped call. If you’re on a landline, make sure that you’re on a high-quality phone to ensure sounding clear to all of the interviewers.

Have Internet Access

It’s a good idea to have a computer, tablet or other Internet connected device on hand to perform any research or look at suggested resources. That technology can be beneficial to check out a particular website during the interview. Ideally, you’ll have a tab already open to the interviewer’s company website, a tab with the job description and another with a search engine.

Prepare for Questions By Writing Down Answers Beforehand

One distinct advantage that you have with a phone interview, as opposed to a face-to-face interview, is writing down your answers beforehand and having that sheet right in front of you. This is helpful because you can instantly provide an insightful answer without having to think too much about it, which makes you more likely to impress your interviewer.

You should never downplay a phone interview. Instead, you should approach it with total seriousness and prepare. By following these tips, you’ll be in a better position to impress your recruiter and move on in the job search.
