3 Ways to Meet New People in 2017 to Help Your Career

Whether you’re hoping to expand your social circle, make some new friends or build upon

your network for employment purposes, meeting new people is a great goal to have in the new year. The great thing is it’s easier than you might think. Here are three ways to meet new people in 2017.

1. Ask Open-Ended Questions

According to Media College, “An open-ended question is designed to encourage a full, meaningful answer using the subject’s own knowledge and/or feelings. It is the opposite of a closed-ended question, which encourages a short or single-word answer.”

This is just the technique you want to implement when striking up a conversation with somebody new. Avoid asking them something that can be answered in “yes” or “no.” Instead, ask questions that demand a more detailed response.

Here are some examples:

  • What made you choose your career path?
  • How have things changed in your industry over the past decade?
  • What are your goals for this year?

2.Talk to People Every Chance You Get

You never know when you’ll have an opportunity to make a connection. Sometimes that random person in the grocery store could end up resulting in a long-lasting relationship that helps propel your career. Never pass up a chance to talk to someone new. Even if it’s only a fleeting conversation, it can help build your confidence, which will make it easier to talk to other people in the future.

3. Have Fun with It

It’s normal to be nervous when meeting new people. After all, the whole notion that you “don’t talk to strangers” is instilled in many of us from a young age. While that mentality does serve a protective purpose, you should try to get out of your shell and just have fun with it. Remember that many other people will be just as nervous as you, so don’t feel bad about it. Also keep in mind that people who initiate conversations are generally regarded as being more confident.

Meeting new people can seem difficult, especially for those who are naturally geared toward introversion. But with a little effort and persistence, you can get in the habit of consistently meeting new people. Not only can this lead to a more fulfilling social life, you never know which new opportunities will come your way.
