Achieve a Positive Work-Life Balance Through the Summer

Summer is a time of year that’s synonymous with the beach, vacations and generally taking it easy. Here are some tips on how to achieve a positive work-life balance during this time to balance taking time to relax with getting the job done.

Establish a Specific Time to Be Done with Work

Do you ever find yourself still working on tasks long after the workday has officially ended? Maybe even doing some work at home simply to catch up?

This isn’t conducive to a healthy work-life balance, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re stopping at a predetermined time each day. What works for many people is having a specific end time in mind and sticking to it. Once you reach that time, wait until the next day to resume your work if possible.

Make Time for Activities Outside of Work

Summer is the season when people frequently take vacations, engage in recreational activities, pursue hobbies and socialize. Make the most of this time by making it a point to devote time to non-work activities. This doesn’t have to be anything over the top, and even a few hours a day should help recharge your batteries.

Take a Vacation

An article in Inc.com lists four science-based reasons why it’s important to take a vacation:

  1. It’s been proven to reduce stress
  2. It prevents heart disease – “Men at risk for heart disease who skipped vacations for five consecutive years were 30 percent more likely to suffer heart attacks than those who took at least a week off each year.”
  3. It increases productivity
  4. It helps you sleep better

Even if a weeklong vacation isn’t feasible, make it a point to take at least a mini-vacation for a few days. This should make you a happier, healthier and more productive employee.

Minimize Connectivity to Work When You’re Away

These days it’s common to be at least a little connected to the workplace and required to answer email, take calls, etc. during the weekend or while on vacation. Try to keep this to a minimum and limit work connectivity as much as possible when you’re away. That way you can be fully present in the moment and not constantly have your mind on work-related tasks.

Of course, work is important, but it’s also important to devote some time to rest and relaxation. Following these tips should help you achieve a healthier work-life balance so that you’re able to make the most of the summer.
