Do You Need That Job on Your Resume? 3 Ways to Cut Your Resume Down

We’ve heard for a long time that your resume should only take up one page. A multi-page resume is just too much and hiring managers will likely toss it away without a second glance. So how do you cut your resume down to make sure it fits on one 8.5” by 11” piece of printer paper?

Here are three tips for cutting down your resume without selling yourself short.

Cut What’s Unimportant

Take a moment to think about what’s really important on your resume, and what’s truly important for the specific job you’re applying for. Your college internship that has nothing to do with the job you’re considering? Get rid of it. Has the line describing your first job out of college that you stayed with for three months? It’s probably not necessary. Getting rid of superfluous information and tailoring your resume appropriately is a great way to cut it down to size.

Keep Bullet Points Short

The bullet points describing your responsibilities at each of your jobs really make up the bulk of your resume. And it’s important to remember that bullet points are, by design, made to be concise. The whole idea is to write a concise description so that readers can understand your experience and professional history at a glance. Try cutting down the descriptions of your job responsibilities to the bare essentials if you need more space on your resume.

Combine Sections Where You Can

Do you have a section on your resume for skills, a separate one for professional achievements, and another for your interests? That’s taking up a lot of real estate on your resume. Consider combining sections where you can to save space. And remember that you can combine certain lines, too — your job title, the company name, and the dates you worked there can all fit on one line, rather than three.

Getting your resume down to one page doesn’t have to be complicated, even if you have a long work history. By saving space strategically, you’ll pack the most punch into that one page!
