The COVID-19 pandemic has given just about everyone a renewed focus on health and wellness, especially in public spaces like the workplace. And with a vaccine probably months — if not years — away and a second wave seeming ever more likely, you’ll want to keep doing everything you can to make sure you’re staying healthy at work.
Take these extra precautions while you’re at work to make sure you stay healthy and safe:
Stay on top of the latest recommendations.
One of the trickiest elements of the entire pandemic is that it’s a very fluid situation. The world’s leading agencies and experts are constantly learning new information and updating their recommendations. So, it’s a good idea to stay on top of those recommendations as much as you can. Try bookmarking the CDC and WHO websites on your computer or mobile device. Both of these sites have a section for the latest updates and current recommended strategies. And take a look at your state and local municipality’s recommendations, too.
Practice good hygiene at all times.
The best thing you can do as an individual, especially when you’re at work, is to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and hot water for at least 20 seconds, and use hand sanitizer immediately after touching any communal surfaces or objects. Avoid touching your face, including your mouth, nose, and eyes, as much as you possibly can. Wear a mask if you’re working in close proximity with others. Use disposable sanitizing wipes to clean surfaces like your desk, door handles, keyboards, etc. that multiple people may have touched.
Stay away from sick or exposed individuals.
Do your best to stay away from sick people, or people who are known to have been in possible exposure areas. Your employer should require anyone who is sick or thinks they may have been exposed to stay home, but you’ll want to play it safe just in case.
Don’t travel unless you have to.
If you normally travel for work, it’s wise to suspend or greatly limit this part of the job for the time being. Hopefully, your employer is on board with this. If you must travel for work, though, use all appropriate hygiene and safety practices to make your exposure risk as minimal as possible.
Stay healthy outside of work.
It’s always a good idea to stay on top of your personal health, but it’s even more essential now that we’re facing a global health crisis. So, make sure to eat right, exercise regularly, and get plenty of sleep. Your body will thank you!
