Job-based burnout is a real phenomenon, and it has very real effects. It happens when an individual experiences a prolonged and heightened response to work stress—that stress can drain you very quickly. But how do you know if you’re entering a burnout phase, and what can you do about it?

Here are five red flags of burnout to watch out for:

You’ve lost interest in your work.

If you feel that you’re simply not interested in your job anymore and that you’ve lost all motivation to do good work, you could be suffering from burnout. It’s time to make some changes.

You find yourself thinking about work all the time.

Some who experience burnout find themselves obsessing over work, even though they’re not necessarily satisfied with their job. It’s important to have healthy boundaries that separate work and the rest of your life — if those lines get blurred, burnout can occur.

Your productivity is dropping.

Is your productivity dropping at work? Are your supervisors and coworkers starting to notice? If your performance is slipping, it might be because you’re burnt out.

You’re constantly exhausted.

Are you tired as soon as you wake up in the morning? Do you find yourself exhausted as you go about your workday? Tiredness is one of those physical symptoms that burnout can lead to. You’ll probably find that when you’re not energized about the work you’re doing, your body doesn’t feel that way, either.

You dread going to work.

If you dread going into work every day, something’s not right. No one should feel that going into work is the worst part of their day.

Don’t overwork yourself, even if you feel that you need that overtime. Take breaks when you need them. Secondly, establish a self-care routine: maintain good habits both on and off the job, like getting regular exercise, eating right, and sleeping a full eight hours a night.

If you feel that burnout is taking a toll on your physical and mental health, it’s worth talking to your supervisor or even your doctor. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!
