How to Overcome Burnout and Stay Motivated

Burnout is a very real problem in today’s workforce. And even if you’re not burnt out, it’s often tough to find the motivation to keep going, day in and day out. So, what can you do to stave off burnout and stay motivated at work? It’s not as hard as you think — it just requires making a commitment to yourself.

Take frequent breaks.

The first rule of thumb is to take breaks and take them often. Simple overworking is the leading cause of burnout. And in today’s fast-paced, high-stakes work environment, it’s harder to take breaks than ever before. But it’s important to take the long weekend, use those paid-time-off days, and use your entire lunch hour. Constantly working simply isn’t sustainable, and it will lead to burnout if you let it.

Limit your use of digital devices after-hours.

When you’re not at work, don’t check your email. Put your phone away for a few hours. Just getting off of the screens and taking a break from the digital world can be extremely revitalizing and healing. Don’t fall into the trap of bringing work home with you, even if it’s just via the smartphone in your pocket.

Set boundaries.

Both at work and outside of the office, set boundaries. Learn to say “no.” Don’t accept work you know you’ll never be able to get to in time. Don’t agree to projects or tasks that you have no hope of completing. Ask for help when you need it. Setting healthy, realistic boundaries is one of the most important things you can do for your mental well-being, and it’s essential for avoiding burnout.

Focus on the meaning of tasks.

Sometimes, we find ourselves completing our daily tasks without really thinking about why we’re doing it in the first place. Re-focusing on the meaning behind your work is a great way to boost your motivation. Maybe your work is helping out your fellow team members; maybe it’s helping out customers, patients, or clients. Maybe it’ll help you get a promotion. Whatever the reason, try to focus on the “why” and see how it affects your motivation level.

Seek help from a professional.

If you’re feeling chronically fatigued and overwhelmed with no end in sight, it’s time to seek help from a professional. Don’t suffer in silence, because it will only get worse. Talk to your supervisor, your HR department, or a counselor.
