Consistently Updating Your LinkedIn Profile Will Make You More Attractive to Hiring Managers

When was the last time you updated your LinkedIn profile? It’s easy to get complacent and neglect your page, but this isn’t advisable. The truth is that consistently keeping your LinkedIn page updated and striving to improve it constantly will make a huge difference in your job search and career success.

Here’s why keeping your LinkedIn page updated will make you more attractive to hiring managers:

It shows your updated experience.

The first reason it’s a good idea to keep your LinkedIn profile updated is the obvious one: it shows your most up-to-date job history and experience. The hiring manager looking at your page will know exactly where you’ve worked, for how long, and what your responsibilities were in each role. If you’ve done your job of describing your responsibilities for each entry, the hiring manager will get a good sense of your skillset and passion within your field. All of this makes for a clear picture of you, the candidate, and why you would be a great hire.

It shows you’re invested in yourself.

Letting your LinkedIn page languish and fall out of date isn’t a good look from the perspective of most hiring managers. It doesn’t show that you’re very invested in yourself or your career; if you can’t keep your LinkedIn page updated, how passionate are you about your job? On the other hand, if your page is updated frequently and is firing on all cylinders, it makes it clear that you’re invested in yourself and what you can offer to other employers.

It demonstrates you’re engaged in the job search.

If you’re actively looking for work—and you notate that clearly on your LinkedIn page—it makes your intentions clear when a hiring manager examines your page. If you haven’t updated your page in a while, it might look like you’ve been out of work for a long time, or that you simply don’t care to update your page. The hiring manager may be left wondering what your work history and current employment status is. By keeping your page updated properly, you leave no room for guesswork.
