It can’t be overstated how important it is to have personal and professional goals in your life. Otherwise, what are you working toward? Many people like to set goals on a yearly basis, which makes sense — it’s a good idea to also have mid-year goals that can help to measure your progress toward those ultimate aims. Now that we’re nearly at the half-way point of the year, it’s a great time to evaluate those goals.
Let’s take a look at four simple steps to evaluate your mid-year goals. That way, you can tell if you’re on track or need to adjust course a bit to keep achieving your dreams.
Step #1: Review Your Progress
The first step is to evaluate the progress you’ve made toward your goals so far. Reflect back on the year, and be honest with yourself: do you feel that you’ve made significant progress toward your goals, or do you feel that you’re at the same point where you started? And don’t be too hard on yourself, either — the point here isn’t to reflect on your failures, but rather to see where you are in your current journey.
Step #2: Identify Challenges
Now, think about the challenges that you’ve faced so far in completing your goals, as well as the challenges that might be holding up continued progress toward those goals. Perhaps it’s a lack of resources or someone that challenges you at work. Once you’ve identified those challenges, you have a much better idea of how to move on in the future and continue working toward those goals without obstacles in your path.
Step #3: Make a Plan
Reflecting back on your progress through the year and identifying specific challenges sets you up for the next step: creating a plan of action. Think about what you need to do next to either stay on track for your current goal or do some re-routing and approach things from a different angle. This step could involve all sorts of things: taking a different attitude or approach in the office, getting to work earlier, trying out a new specialty in your field… the possibilities go on and on, and it’s all up to you.
Step #4: Keep Working or Set New Goals
The next step is to put your plan into action and continue working toward those goals. Or, if you’ve determined that your goals aren’t realistic or you’ve found that you want to start working toward something else entirely, set new goals. There’s nothing wrong with that!
