How to Stay Organized and Focused While Searching For Jobs

Looking for a job can quickly get muddled and confusing without some organization. An organized job search can maximize opportunities so you find the best one for your skill set and career goals.

How Can You Stay Organized When Searching For Jobs?

Why Should You Organize Your Search?

As you begin to find jobs you’re interested in, you’ll need a way to track progress, deadlines, and appointments for each job. You’ll also have to keep track of contact information. Keeping this information organized will allow you to stay focused instead of accidentally missing something important, resulting in a lost opportunity.

4 Steps to Take to Organize Your Job Search

Define Your Goals

First and foremost, before you send even one application, define your professional goals. What are you looking for in your career? What type of schedule and flexibility do you want? Consider the short-term goals and long-term goals during your brainstorm session. Defining your goals can help you stay focused on the right opportunities and not be distracted by job openings that won’t help you in the long run.

Create a Spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is a useful document that will help you keep track of all those important details mentioned earlier. Not sure what information to collect? Consider these:

  • Company Name
  • Company Info – This can include location and core product/service.
  • Contact Person
  • Date of Application
  • Date of Interview
  • Follow-up: Include follow-up messages.
  • Status: Specify the current status of this application process.
  • Listing Source: Where did you find the job opening?

Make a Weekly Schedule

You shouldn’t try to visit job sites on a daily basis; it will be easy to feel bored and anxious. Instead, set a weekly schedule that will help you accomplish your job search tasks with focus. This schedule can change from week to week, and can include anything from revising resumes, to networking, to visiting job listing sites for job openings.

Refrain From Too Many Applications

One of the best ways to stay organized is to refrain from sending out too many applications. Keep in mind the goals you set at the beginning of the journey. If a job opportunity doesn’t seem to fit the goals you’ve determined, it’s best to pass it up. You’d hate to waste your time and resources on a job that you know isn’t what you really want.

With the right organization and focus, searching for a job doesn’t have to be stressful. It can also lead to the best opportunity to fit your career aspirations.
