Job Interview Tips That Will Help You Stand Out

Do you have a job interview lined up soon? Congratulations. Now, it’s time to get ready to ace that interview to give yourself the best possible chance of landing the job. How do you do that?

Here are six job interview tips to help you stand out among the crowd:

Be prepared.

Research the company ahead of time. Find out what they do, their competitors, and what they do differently to stand out. If you can, find some of the company’s leadership on LinkedIn and get a sense of their background and experience. Knowing as much as you can about a company before you interview with them is always a good practice.

Practice your interview skills.

Sit in front of a mirror at home and practice answering common interview questions. Pay attention to your body language. Do you appear confident, calm, and collected? Or do you come across as nervous or uninterested? Working on your interviewing skills this way helps you perform better and have less anxiety.

Arrive on time.

It’s one of the simplest interview tips but one of the easiest to mess up: Arrive at your interview on time. This goes for in-person interviews on-site and virtual interviews conducted over video chats or phone calls. Showing that you’re punctual is an important first step.

Make a good impression.

Dress the part for the position you’re applying for. Make sure your phone is on silent. Make eye contact and be sure to nod and smile to show you’re paying attention. It’s the simple things that help you to make a great first impression on the hiring manager.

Have questions ready.

At the end of the interview, the hiring manager will almost certainly ask you if you have any questions for them. Saying “no” makes it seem like you’re uninterested in the position or like you’re just in search of a paycheck. Come prepared with some questions about the company and the position to show you’re really invested in the role.

Send a follow-up.

Within 24 hours of your interview, send a follow-up through email thanking the hiring manager for their time. Remind them of your continued interest in the position so that you stay top of mind.
